Product information "Pinaud Clubman EAU DE QUININE Hair Tonic"
The oldest hair tonic and a bestseller from Ed. Pinaud since 1810
When Edouard Pinaud opened his world-famous perfumery in Paris in 1810, one product stood out among his specialties: “Eau de Quinine.” This wine-red, quinine-infused scented hair tonic became such a bestseller that, when hygiene became fashionable worldwide around 1900, over 150,000 bottles of Eau de Quinine from Ed. Pinaud were sold each month. Eau de Quinine has a mysterious, bitter-refreshing-sweet scent of quinine, roses, and lavender. It is used as a hair tonic, aftershave, and even as a body refresher. WARNING: Do not use on light-colored hair, as it may stain the hair.
Eau de Quinine (French, pronounced: “Oh dö Kiehnien”; lit. quinine water) is, alongside Eau de Portugal, one of THE hair tonics of the 19th century. There was hardly a manufacturer of perfume or skincare products that did not have these two hair care products in their lineup. But with the “Ed. Pinaud” brand’s Eau de Quinine, you hold the original in your hands.
Eau de Quinine revitalizes and cleanses the scalp, prepares it for pomade, and can also be used on its own as a light, oil-free styling product that subtly keeps hair in place all day long. It is also popular as an aftershave or body splash. In the 19th century, Eau de Quinine was used as a scented hair tonic and a substitute for shampoo (like a liquid dry shampoo).
History
Quinine is an effective muscle relaxant and was the first successful medicine against deadly malaria from the 17th century until the 1940s. It played a significant role in the colonization of Africa by Europeans by protecting them from malaria. And the British colonial rulers in India mixed tonic, a soft drink to which quinine imparted a bitter taste, with gin, thereby creating one of the most popular cocktails of all time.
In the 19th century, Eau de Quinine became one of the most important hair care products. And not just in Europe, but also in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. At a time when shampoo had not yet been invented, this hair tonic served as a scalp cleanser. It removes excess oils from the scalp, binds loose dandruff, and ensures a clean scalp.
The Packaging
The travel-friendly, lightweight plastic bottle was, of course, originally made of glass. However, the neck of this bottle is not unbreakable, so please handle the bottle and its precious contents with care. The beautiful, nostalgic label has remained virtually unchanged. Above the flower basket typical of Ed. Pinaud stands—now with a nostalgic feel—“Hygiene de la tête,” meaning “head hygiene.”
Consistency and Fragrance
Eau de Quinine looks like a dark red wine and is just as fascinating. Once you’ve opened the red screw cap and taken a sniff (the fragrance unfolds better here than at the bottle opening), you’ll search in vain for words to describe this aroma. No, nothing comparable comes to mind. The scent is classically elegant, fruity-tart, refreshingly sweet, somehow familiar and yet mysterious.
Application
Hair tonics like Eau de Quinine are used daily in the morning or as needed instead of washing your hair. To do this, place the bottle opening directly against the scalp and apply one spritz at a time. Repeat this evenly over the head 3–4 times. Then massage the scalp and hair with your fingertips. The Hair Tonic and the massage revitalize, refresh, and stimulate blood circulation in the scalp.
To achieve a styling effect, massage the hair and scalp until the hair feels almost dry. Now comb and brush the hair into the desired style.
The Hair Tonic comes in a clear plastic bottle with a red screw cap.

Sehr gut!
