Product information "Das Pomade-Buch"

Das Pomade-Buch – The World’s Only Specialist Book About Pomades and Hair Tonics

The comprehensive reference work on authentic hair styling and grooming products from the 1920s to the 1950s. Across 320 richly illustrated pages, author and PomadeShop founder Stan Soldan explores the history of pomades, hair tonics, hair creams and natural-bristle brushes. Featuring more than 250 historical advertisements and vintage and contemporary product images. High-quality second-edition hardcover with sewn binding. Written entirely in German.

Das Pomade-Buch was the world’s first and remains the only comprehensive specialist book devoted entirely to the history of traditional pomades, hair tonics and related grooming products. It has been created for enthusiasts of classic men’s grooming as well as curious readers, collectors, barbers, hairdressers and anyone wishing to understand the origins of modern hairstyling.

Author Stan Soldan is one of the pioneers of the modern pomade revival in Europe. In 2008, he founded PomadeShop, the first specialist store for classic hair styling products, and played a major role in introducing an almost forgotten grooming product to a new generation.

Years of research, historical advertising, rare product images and first-hand experience gained while building PomadeShop form the foundation of this exceptional reference work.

Authentic hair styling products from the 1920s to the 1950s

For many decades, pomade was the essential styling product for well-groomed hairstyles. It shaped side parts, slick backs, pompadours and carefully arranged waves long before hair gel, hairspray and modern styling waxes entered the market.

Das Pomade-Buch explains how products, hairstyles, advertising and grooming habits changed throughout the decades. Its subject is not limited to pomade but encompasses the entire world of classic hair care, from hair tonics and brilliantines to hair creams and traditional natural-bristle brushes.

What you will discover

  • The history of pomade and its most important manufacturers
  • Authentic hair styling products from the 1920s to the 1950s
  • Traditional oil-based pomades and their different degrees of hold
  • Hair tonics, hair oils, brilliantines and hair creams
  • Classic men’s hairstyles and historical styling routines
  • The role of natural-bristle brushes in grooming, shine and shaping
  • Historic packaging, tins, bottles and label designs
  • More than 250 vintage advertisements and historical and modern product images
  • Background knowledge gathered through years of research and practical experience
  • Insights into the rediscovery of pomade and the creation of PomadeShop

More than a reference book

Das Pomade-Buch is simultaneously a cultural history, illustrated volume and personal journey of discovery. Historical advertisements and product images reveal the importance once placed on well-groomed hair, an attractive fragrance and an immaculate appearance.

The book recalls a time when hair care was a deliberate daily ritual. Products were carefully selected, used economically and worked precisely into the hair with a comb or brush.

It is therefore also a tribute to craftsmanship, durable products and a tradition-conscious approach to grooming.

Who is Das Pomade-Buch for?

  • Pomade and hair-tonic enthusiasts
  • Barbers, hairdressers and barbering students
  • Collectors of historical grooming products and advertising
  • Fans of the 1920s to the 1950s
  • Enthusiasts of classic men’s hairstyles
  • Readers interested in cultural, design and advertising history
  • Anyone wishing to learn about sustainable and traditional hair care
  • A high-quality gift for gentlemen, barbers and pomade enthusiasts

About the author Stan Soldan

Stan Soldan rediscovered pomade as “the hair gel of our grandparents” at a time when this traditional styling product had almost completely disappeared from public awareness.

By founding PomadeShop in 2008, he made traditional pomades and hair tonics accessible again in Europe. His meticulous search for historical products, forgotten brands, vintage advertisements and authentic application techniques eventually led to the creation of this book.

The focus is not the author himself but the fascinating history of the products. Every pomade tin, hair-tonic bottle and natural-bristle brush tells a story of past beauty ideals, craftsmanship and a distinctive grooming culture.

From history to your own grooming routine

Anyone wishing to experience classic hair care rather than merely read about it will find a suitable interpretation of 1950s and 1960s men’s grooming in the Don Draper range. Its hair tonics, pomades, aftershaves and brushes bring many of the rituals described in the book into the present day.

Sweet Georgia Brown Hair Tonic continues the tradition of 1930s American barbershop grooming. Combined with classic Sweet Georgia Brown pomades and a natural-bristle brush, it demonstrates how traditional hair care, fragrance and styling once formed a complete daily ritual.

High-quality production

The second edition is presented as a large-format hardcover with durable sewn binding. This high-quality construction ensures that the book remains stable even when frequently read and consulted.

Its 210 × 270 mm format provides ample room for the historical advertisements and product photography. Across 320 pages, it becomes both a comprehensive reference work and a decorative collector’s item.

Hallo Stan

Murray's Superior Hair Dressing Pomade - 100 Years Edition

Murray’s Superior Pomade – The World-Famous Classic in the “100 Years” Design The legendary Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing Pomade in the new “100 Years” design. Since 1926, this American classic has stood for very strong hold, subtle shine and unmistakable barbershop character. Its traditional formula with only a few ingredients controls even thick, curly and unruly hair. Made in the USA by Murray’s – one of the world’s best-known pomade brands. Few hair pomades have influenced the history of classic men’s hairstyles as profoundly as Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing Pomade. Since its introduction in 1926, it has become one of the world’s best-known oil-based pomades. The new “100 Years” design celebrates a century of pomade history and gives the legendary tin a special collectable character. The secret of its success is as simple as it is effective: an exceptionally firm and economical pomade that reliably controls even difficult-to-manage hair. As only a small amount is required, one tin can last for a particularly long time when used sparingly. Hold, Shine and Finish Hold: very strong Shine: low to satin Finish: classic, controlled and flexible Scent: warm, mild and subtly sweet Very Strong Hold Without Hardening Murray’s Superior provides a very strong, long-lasting hold without hardening the hair completely. It reliably controls thick, curly or unruly hair and helps create clearly defined shapes. Unlike gel pomades, the hairstyle remains flexible and can be reshaped at any time with a comb or brush. The hold can be built gradually by applying several small amounts of product. Classic Shine and a Controlled Finish The pomade gives the hair a subtle satin shine that looks polished and emphasises the classic character of the hairstyle. Its shine is more restrained than that of a soft pomade, as Murray’s Superior focuses primarily on hold and control. Murray’s Superior is particularly suitable for: Pompadours: for plenty of volume and dependable stability Slick backs: for a smooth and controlled shape Executive contours: for classic barber styles with a clean silhouette Side parts: for precise lines and long-lasting definition Rockabilly hairstyles: for traditional styles with an authentic pomade finish Thick or curly hair: for particularly strong control Ideal as a Base Pomade Many pomade enthusiasts use Murray’s Superior as a base pomade. Its strong hold provides a stable foundation that can then be combined with a softer pomade. For additional shine or a smoother surface, apply a small amount of Don Draper Men’s Pomade, Sweet Georgia Brown, Murray’s Super Light or Murray’s Hair-Glo over the finished hairstyle. Consistency and Application The honey-coloured Murray’s Superior has an exceptionally firm and slightly sticky consistency. Some pressure is required to scoop it from the tin. The warmth generated between the palms makes the pomade more pliable and easier to distribute through the hair. For even application, begin with a very small amount. Rub it thoroughly between your hands and work it through the hair from the roots to the ends. Add further small amounts gradually if required. The Scent The fragrance of Murray’s Superior is as distinctive as its hold. It is classic, warm and subtly sweet. Many users notice nuances reminiscent of vanilla, caramel and lightly powdery barbershop notes. The scent remains pleasantly understated in the hair and combines well with an aftershave or fragrance. Application Remove a small amount from the tin with your finger and rub it thoroughly between your palms until the pomade becomes slightly more pliable. Work it evenly through dry or slightly damp hair. Applied to dry hair, Murray’s Superior develops its strongest hold. In slightly damp hair, it spreads more easily and produces a little more shine. Shape the desired hairstyle with a sturdy comb or hairbrush. For very thick hair, the closed tin or the removed amount of product can be warmed carefully with a hairdryer before application. Buildup and Restyling Murray’s Superior is ideal for creating a traditional pomade buildup. Some of the product remains in the hair after washing and provides a stable foundation for styling the following day. A little water or a few splashes of hair tonic are often enough to refresh the hairstyle. The hair can then be recombed and finished with a small amount of fresh pomade if required. Washing Out As a traditional oil-based pomade, Murray’s Superior cannot be removed completely with water alone. Thorough removal usually requires several washes with a deeply cleansing shampoo or a dedicated degreasing shampoo. Many traditional pomade enthusiasts deliberately leave some product in the hair and use the remaining buildup for quicker and more stable styling over the following days. The “100 Years” Design To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Murray’s Superior, the iconic metal tin is presented in a special “100 Years” design. The anniversary edition combines the familiar retro appearance with a visible tribute to the remarkable history of this pomade, which has been available since 1926. Packaged in the classic metal tin – now featuring the new “100 Years” design. Made in the USA. Free from colourants and added preservatives. Booklet "How to give Haircuts" (1958)

How to Give Haircuts at Home! – Rare 1950s American Haircutting Manual A high-quality reprint of a rare American barbering booklet originally published in 1958. US barber Howard Jones provides step-by-step instructions for essential haircutting techniques and six of the most popular men’s and boys’ haircuts of the 1950s. Illustrated with 69 vintage black-and-white photographs, seven drawings and four original advertisements. “How to Give Haircuts at Home!” is a little treasure for barbers, Rockabilly enthusiasts and anyone interested in classic men’s hairstyles. Written by American barber Howard Jones in 1958, the 48-page booklet shows how authentic haircuts of the period were actually created. Rather than offering a modern interpretation of 1950s style, the manual presents genuine instructions from the era. Numerous photographs and drawings demonstrate the individual stages, making this booklet an unusual historical reference for traditional barbering techniques. The Fundamentals of Haircutting Howard Jones begins by introducing the essential principles of haircutting. He presents the necessary equipment, explains how to handle scissors, combs and clippers, and demonstrates fundamental cutting techniques that remain familiar in barbershops today. Additional sections cover important “Do’s and Don’ts” and the intriguingly titled “Three Secrets of Haircutting”. The booklet therefore provides more than instructions for individual styles: it also offers a fascinating glimpse into American barbering education during the late 1950s. The Six Most Popular Haircuts of 1958 The Regular Boy’s Haircut: A versatile all-round style for boys between eight and fifteen years old. The Teenager’s Haircut: A classic 1950s haircut for teenagers and young adults. The Trim: The traditional maintenance cut for men of all ages, demonstrated on a family father. Clipper All the Way Around: A fully clipper-cut style that was particularly popular among older gentlemen with grey or white hair. The Flattop Butch: A highly fashionable short haircut for teenagers and adults from the mid-1950s onward. The manual also explains the differences between a Flattop Butch, Regular Butch and Crew Cut. The Regular Butch: An exceptionally short, practical haircut recommended at the time for younger boys. Vintage Advice on Hair Tonics and Lanolin In the final section, Howard Jones answers common hair-care questions of the period. He discusses what could be done about dull-looking hair, what a typical hair tonic contained and how lanolin was used in grooming products. These short explanations turn the booklet into a particularly interesting historical document. They reveal the importance of hair tonics, styling creams and pomades in everyday 1950s grooming – at a time when complete ingredient declarations were not yet commonplace. Featuring Original Advertisements Four original advertisements for hair tonics and styling creams complement the haircutting instructions. They provide an authentic impression of American men’s grooming products and advertising design during the late 1950s. Who Is This Booklet For? Barbers and hairdressers interested in historical cutting techniques Fans of flattops, crew cuts and authentic 1950s hairstyles Rockabilly, vintage and Fifties enthusiasts Collectors of historical barbering and grooming literature Anyone looking for an unusual gift for a pomade or barbershop fan Readers who would like to explore the history of pomades, hair tonics, styling creams and traditional hairbrushes in even greater depth will find the perfect companion in Stan Soldan’s German-language reference work “Das Pomade-Buch”, featuring 320 pages and more than 250 historical images. High-quality reprint of the 1958 booklet. 48 pages with laminated softcover and staple binding. Featuring 69 black-and-white photographs, seven drawings and four vintage advertisements. Language: English. Dimensions: 148 × 210 mm.

Sweet Georgia Brown Metal Sign

Sweet Georgia Brown Metal Sign – Premium Vintage Advertising, Made in Germany A premium Sweet Georgia Brown advertising sign made from extra-strong sheet steel. Its richly coloured artwork, inspired by classic American pomade advertising, is embossed on several levels and enhanced by a gently curved shape for an especially dimensional appearance. With rounded corners and four pre-drilled mounting holes. Perfect for barbershops, bathrooms, dressing rooms, hair salons and collections. Made in Germany. The Sweet Georgia Brown Metal Sign brings the unmistakable charm of classic American grooming advertising to the wall. Bearing the words “Sweet Georgia Brown – Hair Dressing Pomade,” it celebrates a brand renowned since 1934 for legendary pomades, iconic packaging and one of the best-known fragrances in international pomade culture. Whether displayed in a professional barbershop, a home bathroom or a private collection, the sign creates a distinctive nostalgic accent. At a glance, it shows that classic grooming and authentic vintage style have found their proper home. A Legendary Brand in a Classic Advertising Style Sweet Georgia Brown originally formed part of the range created by the Valmor Products Company of Chicago. The brand’s vivid colours, bold figures and instantly recognisable artwork made its packaging and advertising particularly distinctive as early as the 1930s. This metal sign captures that characteristic advertising style. Its strong colours and nostalgic typography evoke historical American barbershops, drugstores and beauty shops, where highly visible branded signs told customers which grooming products were available inside. Multi-Level Embossed Artwork The artwork is not simply printed onto the surface. Lettering, contours and selected details are embossed into the stable sheet steel on several levels. This gives the design an attractive three-dimensional quality and a noticeably premium appearance. The gentle curvature provides additional stability and makes the artwork appear particularly lively. Rich colour printing creates clear contrasts and ensures that the sign remains an eye-catching feature even when viewed from a distance. Extra-Strong and Durable Sheet Steel The sign is manufactured from especially robust sheet steel. Its substantial material, cleanly finished edges and rounded corners provide a high-quality feel and excellent durability. Unlike thin decorative signs, it feels solid and retains its shape. This makes it an excellent choice for permanent displays, busy barbershops and private rooms furnished with carefully selected vintage pieces. Quick and Easy to Mount Four pre-drilled holes in the corners make installation straightforward. Depending on the mounting surface, the sign can be attached to a wall, door or retail fixture using screws, nails or suitable hooks. Its practical 20 × 30 cm dimensions require relatively little wall space while remaining large enough to display the artwork and Sweet Georgia Brown lettering to full effect. Ideal for Barbershops and Retailers In a barbershop or hair salon, the sign serves not only as decoration but also as an elegant brand marker. It lets customers know that Sweet Georgia Brown products are available and encourages them to discover this historic grooming name. It looks particularly effective beside a display of Sweet Georgia Brown Pomades, Sweet Georgia Brown Hair Tonic or Sweet Georgia Brown Cocoanut Oil Shampoo, creating a coordinated retail presentation with authentic historical character. Ideal Locations for the Metal Sign Barbershops and traditional hair salons Bathrooms and private grooming areas Dressing rooms, home bars and gentlemen’s rooms Rock ’n’ roll, pomade and Americana collections Vintage shops and retail spaces Workshops, garages and hobby rooms As a gift for Sweet Georgia Brown fans and pomade enthusiasts Benefits at a Glance Official Sweet Georgia Brown artwork in a classic advertising style Made from extra-strong, shape-retaining sheet steel Gently curved surface Detailed multi-level embossing Richly coloured, finely detailed print Rounded corners Four pre-drilled mounting holes Ideal for barbershops, bathrooms and collections Individually protected in a plastic sleeve Made in Germany Care Remove dust and light dirt with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.
