From the 1940s through the 1960s, hair tonic was an essential part of a well-dressed gentleman’s grooming routine. It stood beside the aftershave, comb and hairbrush in the bathroom each morning. In American barbershops, a relaxing hair-tonic massage was also frequently the crowning conclusion to a haircut.

Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD continues this tradition. Unlike the intensely cooling BLUE and GREEN hair tonics, GOLD focuses on softness, conditioning, shine and light manageability. It is particularly suitable for dry, brittle, wavy or flyaway hair and creates a polished hairstyle without making it hard.

Not a Heavy Oil Mixture, but Modern Conditioning

Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD is often described as an oil-based hair tonic. However, the current formula contains neither heavy mineral oil nor pure olive oil. Instead, it uses Olive Oil PEG-7 Esters—water-soluble conditioning components derived from olive oil that distribute particularly evenly through the hair.

GOLD therefore combines the smooth hair feel of traditional oily tonics with a lighter, more modern application. When used in the appropriate amount, the hair remains flexible and well groomed without feeling unnecessarily heavy or excessively greasy.

15% Glycerin for Softness and Shine

Applied before an oil- or water-based pomade, Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD softens dry or stubborn hair. The styling product can then be worked through more evenly and distributed with greater control using a comb or brush.

The tonic can also reactivate an existing pomade hairstyle the following morning. Work a small amount into the hair, comb thoroughly and add a little Don Draper Pomade if additional hold is required.

Applying with the Palms

Dispense a small amount into the palm and distribute it between both hands. Massage it carefully into dry or towel-dried hair and, if desired, the scalp.

Create the basic shape with the Don Draper Premium Comb and smooth the hair with a Don Draper hairbrush. Follow with a small amount of Don Draper Pomade if stronger hold is required.

Applying Directly to the Hair and Scalp

Carefully place the bottle opening against several areas and dispense a small amount at each point. Distribute the tonic thoroughly using the fingertips. Begin sparingly and gradually add more if required.

Excessive product may weigh down particularly fine hair. The amount may be increased accordingly for dry, thick or curly hair.

The Classic 60-Second Ritual

Distribute Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD through dry or towel-dried hair. Massage it into the hair and scalp with the fingertips for approximately 50 seconds, using firm yet comfortable pressure.

Spend the final ten seconds shaping the hairstyle with a comb and brush. This distributes the tonic evenly, gives the hair a more polished appearance and allows the elegant GOLD fragrance to unfold fully.

Classic Warm-Towel Application

For a relaxing barbershop ritual, briefly place a warm, damp and well-wrung towel over the head. The warmth feels relaxing and makes the subsequent hair-tonic massage particularly enjoyable.

Remove the towel, massage Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD into the hair and scalp and finish the hairstyle with a comb and brush. Contrary to a common belief, the warm towel does not open the pores; it simply provides a soothing and relaxing sensation.

Washing Out and Multi-Day Use

Don Draper Hair Tonic GOLD can be partially rinsed out with warm water and removed thoroughly with a regular shampoo. The appropriate frequency of washing depends on hair type, scalp, amount applied and personal grooming routine.

If well tolerated, the tonic may also remain in the hair overnight. Allow it to absorb or dry completely before going to bed. As the formula contains colourants, avoid contact with light-coloured or delicate textiles.
