Product information "Murray's X-Tra Heavy Pomade"
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy Pomade – Extreme Hold for Unruly Hair
The extra-hard version of the legendary Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing Pomade: extreme hold, subtle classic shine and authentic American barbershop character. Exceptionally tough, demanding to apply and particularly difficult to wash out. Made in the USA by Murray’s – the iconic brand for classic pomades since 1925. Warning: This pomade is not suitable for beginners!
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy Pomade was developed for experienced pomade enthusiasts who need even more strength than the legendary Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing Pomade can provide. Its uncompromisingly firm formula controls thick, curly and extremely unruly hair while supporting classic hairstyles that demand maximum stability.
Even the design of the tin announces the exceptional character of this pomade. While the classic Murray’s Superior features its familiar retro artwork, X-Tra Heavy displays a large red X in a distinctive stamped design—a fitting warning for one of the most demanding pomades in the Murray’s range.
At first glance, the honey-coloured pomade appears familiar and resembles the classic Murray’s Superior. As soon as it is worked between the hands, however, the difference becomes obvious: X-Tra Heavy is considerably tougher, stickier and firmer.
Hold, Shine and Finish
Hold: extreme
Shine: low to subtle
Finish: classic, controlled and flexible
Scent: mild, aromatic and classically American
Extreme Hold for Maximum Control
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy is one of the strongest traditional oil-based pomades available. It provides dependable control for thick, coarse, curly or difficult-to-manage hair and is particularly suitable for tall or precisely shaped hairstyles.
Once distributed evenly through the hair, it gives the style exceptional stability. At the same time, the hair remains flexible—as expected from a traditional oil-based pomade—and can be reshaped throughout the day using a comb or brush.
Demanding Application
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy reveals its characteristic toughness as soon as it is rubbed between the palms. Its consistency is often compared to warm chewing gum and requires patience, strength and experience during application.
For the most even distribution, use only small amounts and work them into the hair gradually. At low temperatures or when styling particularly thick hair, the closed tin or the removed amount of product can be warmed carefully with a hairdryer.
Suitable For
- Extremely unruly hair: for maximum control and dependable shape
- Thick or curly hair: for particularly demanding hairstyles
- High pompadours: for volume and exceptional stability
- Slick backs: for a controlled, compact shape
- Executive contours: for classic barber styles with a clean silhouette
- Side parts: for long-lasting definition
Subtle Classic Shine
Despite its extreme firmness, Murray’s X-Tra Heavy does not produce a completely dry or matte appearance. It gives the hair a subtle, traditional pomade shine that looks polished and emphasises the classic character of the hairstyle.
The shine is more restrained than that of softer pomades, allowing the controlled shape of the hairstyle to remain the main focus.
The Scent
The fragrance has a distinctly American barbershop character and differs slightly from that of Murray’s Superior. It is aromatic, mild and well rounded. Some users find it reminiscent of DAX Wave & Groom Hair Dressing.
The scent remains pleasantly subtle in the hair and can easily be combined with an aftershave or fragrance.
Application
Depending on your hair length, remove a very small amount from the tin. Rub the pomade thoroughly between your palms or warm it carefully with a hairdryer beforehand until it becomes slightly more pliable.
Work several small portions evenly through the hair from the roots to the ends. Shape the hairstyle with a sturdy comb and smooth the sides with a hairbrush if required.
For particularly thick or unruly hair, build up the hold in layers. Only add another small amount once the previous portion has been distributed evenly throughout the hair.
Buildup and Restyling
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy is ideal for creating a multi-day pomade buildup. Some of the product remains in the hair after washing and can serve as a stable foundation for styling the following day.
A little water or a few splashes of hair tonic are often enough to refresh the style. The hair can then be reshaped using a comb or brush.
Washing Out
Due to its particularly resistant petrolatum- and paraffin-based formula, Murray’s X-Tra Heavy cannot be removed with water alone. Complete removal usually requires several washes with a thoroughly cleansing shampoo or a dedicated degreasing shampoo.
Many traditional pomade enthusiasts deliberately leave some X-Tra Heavy in their hair and use the remaining buildup as a foundation for styling over the following days.
Warning
Murray’s X-Tra Heavy is not suitable as an introduction to traditional oil-based pomades. Its extreme toughness, demanding application and stubborn washout require experience, patience and the correct styling technique.

(Bonecrusher HairOil & Reuzel Daily Conditioner)
